Walking the talk!
The Ashevillage team, along with interns, community members and friends, have developed our one-acre site into a demonstration of integrated ecological systems that can be scaled to any environment. We believe firmly in creating the world we want to live in now and putting our beliefs into practice…in our own backyard. We grow food and medicine, capture and use rainwater, and show others how to do the same. This residential site is an 8-minute walk from downtown Asheville, North Carolina and is bordered by 60 acres of woods and walking trails.
Highlights include:
• 18,000 gallon living rainwater catchment system including:
- biological, mycological and geological remediation,
- five recirculating aquaponic ponds, bogs, and catchment swales,
- an aquaponic greenhouse with integrated chicken coop and shower
• Earthworks that further maximize rainwater retention and utilization
• Two naturally renovated houses, one for guests and one for residents
• Beautiful and organic edible, medicinal and flowered landscape
• Bees, chickens, soldier fly larvae & mushroom production
• Outdoor kitchen with wood-fired cook stove & oven
• Natural buildings, renovations & mud art
• Woods with camping and meeting space
• Recycled urbanite patio
